OUTDOOR ADVENTURE ZONE

Safe Recess for Elementary School Students

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Outdoor Adventure Zone is to create a fun environment that encourages children to be more active and develop a healthy lifestyle while maintaining social distancing. The recent events with COVID-19 have limited opportunities to be active, and social distancing has prevented children from going outside to play. Technology like television and video games also keep students indoors. This zone allows kids to have an area where they can safely play individually or with others while social distancing is being maintained. The activities in the Outdoor Adventure Zone work to build children’s strength, balance, coordination, and endurance.

This project was created in accordance to Brooke's Gold Award Project - Outdoor Adventure Zone: Safe Recess for Elementary School Students.

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE

There are numerous health benefits to being active. Along with having a lower risk of disease, stronger muscles, and more energy, exercise also serves to improve people’s state of mind. Being active can improve people’s quality of life with better sleep and becoming more focused. Thirty to sixty minutes of activity every day helps people stay healthy overall. Staying active can also lead to new friends and fun adventures. Whether it be biking in the mountains, kayaking in rivers, running in a park, or playing sports, exercise can bring groups together as one.

SQUATS

Ready to test your endurance?  Try squats! Place your feet shoulder-width apart and bend at your knees and hips with your chest lifted. Keep your knees over your ankles and hold your arms out to help retain balance. Hold for a couple of seconds before returning to start position and repeat.
